Food Lion Exec Tapped for EPA and DOE Energy Efficiency Leadership Group

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Ruth Kinzey, Food Lion's director of corporate communications, has joined participants from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), and leading utilities, state agencies, and energy consumers to lay the groundwork for a national Energy Efficiency Action Plan.

The leaders will develop and document sound business practices for energy efficiency. They have agreed to pursue these practices through their business channels, as appropriate, upon completion of the action plan. The first meeting was held Friday in Washington, D.C.

Kinzey will serve on a team exploring best practices in energy conservation. At Food Lion, Kinzey works closely with the retailer's energy management team as the chain pursues aggressive energy conservation efforts. Because of its energy management practices, Food Lion received the EPA's Energy Star Partner of the Year awards in 2001 and 2002. In both years Food Lion was the only supermarket company to receive the honor.

In 2003 and 2004 the EPA again recognized Food Lion's energy efforts by awarding Food Lion the Energy Star Sustained Excellence Award. Energy Star is the government-backed program that encourages energy efficiency and reduced carbon dioxide emissions among businesses and consumers.

Food Lion was chosen to participate in the Leadership Group because the chain has more Energy Star stores than any other U.S. retailer and frequently works with the EPA and DOE to push conservation efforts to increasingly higher levels. In October, Food Lion announced that 400 of its stores have earned the Energy Star designation for superior energy performance and management.

Food Lion, LLC, a subsidiary of Brussels-based Delhaize Group, operates more than 1,220 supermarkets, either directly or through affiliated entities, under the Food Lion, Bloom, Bottom Dollar, Harveys, and Reid's banners.
