Food Lion HQ To Get Facelift, Expansion

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Food Lion is planning to invest $35 million to renovate and expand its headquarters here. The first phase of the facelift will create offices and meeting rooms in what is now unused warehouse space in the retailer's main distribution center.

Once Food Lion completes the first phase of the project later this year, it will relocate 400 employees to the office from the chain's support center. Renovation work on the support center is expected to be complete in early 2007.

Food Lion expects the upgrade overall to take two years to complete.

"We are excited about these plans and the fact we will leverage our existing facilities to provide our associates an enhanced working environment, while adding space for future growth," said Glenn Dixon, Food Lion's s.v.p. of corporate development. "This large-scale project will keep all of our corporate headquarters functions in Salisbury and Rowan County. This is a clear indication of Food Lion's continued commitment to this community."

A subsidiary of Delhaize America Inc., Food Lion operates 1,300 stores and has more than 73,000 employees.
