Food Lion Named EPA Energy Star 2003 Partner of the Year

SALISBURY, N.C. - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has named Food Lion an Energy Star Partner of the year for its "outstanding" reductions in energy consumption.

Food Lion is being honored for adopting and applying energy management practices and technology throughout its store operations. In 2002, the retailer greatly reduced its energy consumption by upgrading and refining its stores' lighting, heating, and refrigeration systems. Even though it added new stores and increased its total square footage by 2.2 percent, Food Lion's total energy consumption dropped by more than 415 Btu.

Food Lion also earned the designation last year, and is the only supermarket company ever to receive the honor. It will be recognized at an April 15 awards ceremony in Washington.
