Former Louisiana Retailer to Direct NGA's Government Affairs

ARLINGTON, Va. -- The National Grocers Association said yesterday it appointed Gregory B. Ferrara, the former president of a supermarket that was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, as director of government affairs.

"As someone who was a food retailer, Greg brings his years of food retail experience and knowledge to NGA, as well as a passion for government affairs and association involvement, which will be of real value in serving the needs of independent, community-focused retailers and wholesalers," said Tom Wenning, NGA's s.v.p. and general counsel.

Ferrara will be responsible for monitoring, reporting, and lobbying on state and federal issues affecting independent grocers and wholesalers. He will also be engaged in the grassroots development and communication of NGA's Campaign to Preserve Competition and Consumer Choice to level the playing field on public policy issues, such as what the association views as unfair local tax subsidies and incentives being offered to supercenters.

Ferrara will work to expand and grow NGA's retailer and wholesaler grassroots network through the Grocer's Action Network and be the staff facilitator for State Association Advisory Council.

Ferrara comes to NGA with a wealth of experience in the grocery industry as he is the former president of Ferrara Supermarket, which was an active NGA member until the business was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Ferrara is also the past treasurer of the Louisiana Retailers Association and former vice-chairman of its Legislative Committee, where he assisted in lobbying activities at the state capital.

Ferrara holds a BA in Political Science from Loyola University New Orleans and is a fellow of Loyola's Institute of Politics.
