The Fresh Market Eyes N.Y. Entry

Southern-bred specialty operator The Fresh Market appears to be heading north to the home turf of Golub Price Chopper in New York State, according to a report in the Schenectady Daily Gazette, which identified The Fresh Market as a tenant in a redevelopment in the town of Colonie, bordering Schenectady County, N.Y.

A spokeswoman for the Greensboro, N.C.-based grocer said the chain is looking for “something in the area,” but did not confirm that it had found a site.

“All I know is they’re looking,” Jennifer Foushee of The Fresh Market told the Schenectady newspaper. “We’re just not at a point we can talk about anything because we don’t have anything finalized.

The Fresh Market at Colonie would be the grocer’s first in New York. The chain said in June that it would open its first Northeast store next spring, in the Boston suburb of Hingham.

At around 20,000 square feet, a typical unit of The Fresh Market is roughly a third the size of many of the region’s existing supermarkets operated by Price Chopper and Hannaford. The Fresh Market operates 84 stores in 18 states concentrated in the Southeast, Midwest, and Mid-Atlantic regions, with plans for continued expansion in these areas.
