Giant Eagle Heralds Arrival of Wild Alaskan Copper River Salmon

PITTSBURGH -- Giant Eagle here has set the bait for customers two weeks in advance of the arrival of the Wild Alaskan Copper River salmon selling season, set to begin May 20.

Available for only three to four weeks from mid-May to mid-June, chefs and salmon lovers anxiously await the arrival of this wild-caught salmon, which is renowned for its rich tasting flavor and abundant Omega-3 oils.

To kick off the Copper River special sales event, Giant Eagle alerted customers this week via electronic newsletter that the signature salmon would soon be showing up in its stores' seafood cases. The newsletter also offered excellent educational pointers to further lure customers to trade up to Copper River Salmon.

Giant Eagle's e-newsletter begins by asking, "What's so great about wild Alaskan Copper River salmon? One bite of this richly colored, well textured and nutty flavored fish -- found at Giant Eagle in King and Sockeye varieties -- and you'll understand its well-earned reputation as a prize catch."

The chain offers background on Alaska's famed Copper River, a cold, rushing river nearly 300 miles long that breeds salmon that are exceptionally strong with a healthy reserve of natural oils and body fat. "As a result, salmon from the Copper River are among the most flavorful fish in the world. Loaded with essential Omega-3 oils, recommended by the American Heart Association to fight heart disease, Copper River Salmon is not only amazingly flavorful, but amazingly good for you, too!"

With approximately $5.5 billion in annual sales, Giant Eagle operates 140 corporate and 73 independently owned and operated supermarkets, in addition to more than 90 fuel and convenience stores, throughout western Pennsylvania, Ohio, north central West Virginia and Maryland.
