Giant Offers Unique Way to Feed Needy Families

LANDOVER, Md. - Giant and Super G customers will have a unique opportunity to help feed needy families this holiday season by purchasing You Can Help Hunger Boxes, which will be available for purchase from Oct. 26 through Nov. 16.

The You Can Help Hunger Boxes contain 11 different nonperishable food items needed by local food banks and will sell for $7.99. The items include whole kernel corn, sweet peas, cut green beans, black-eyed peas, sliced peaches, macaroni and cheese, cream of potato soup, pear halves, oatmeal, long-grain rice, and chicken noodle soup. As customers purchase a hunger box, it will be placed in a collection cart at the store and then distributed to area food banks in Giant's market area encompassing Maryland, Virginia, the District of Columbia, New Jersey, and Delaware.

Over 12,000 You Can Help Hunger Boxes were packed by a group of volunteers at the Capital Area Food Bank on Oct. 11-12. Volunteers came from Giant Food, area food banks, local schools, and area church groups. Barry Scher, v.p. of public affairs for Giant Food, commented, "It was an amazing effort and we thank all of the volunteers who assisted in assembling the 12,000 Hunger Boxes. More than 200 people took time out of their weekend to give something back to their community." Lynn Brantley, executive director of the Capital Area Food Bank, added, "The You Can Help Hunger Boxes contain quality products that our member agencies can certainly use to stock their shelves as the holidays approach. This is the neediest time of year for us, and the Hunger Boxes will help us feed the poor and hungry in our community."

As part of Giant's annual Good Neighbor Food and Funds Drive, Giant and Super G customers will also have the option of donating funds to local food banks by presenting a special donation form, available at every checkout lane, to a cashier. In addition to the You Can Help Hunger Boxes, customers may also donate other nonperishable food items at Giant and Super G stores, which will be given to area food banks.
