Golub Price Chopper Teams With College on Grocery Course
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- The Golub Corp., based here, which operates more than 100 Price Chopper supermarkets, is collaborating with Troy, N.Y.-based Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) to develop a course that teaches basic work skills for the grocery industry.
The college had earlier joined with the grocer to offer a 32-credit supermarket management and operations certificate for employees of company, according to a local press report. The course currently in development would provide industry-specific education to potential employees.
One aspect to be dealt with in the course will be food safety, according to Golub's director of training, Terry Hall. "People don't, in general, have a full understanding of what is required and needed to keep consumer foods safe and the practices that are involved in the industry," Hall told the Albany, N.Y. Business Review. "That is key to make sure people understand."
The idea behind the course "is giving that remedial training needed to hold a position to people to put them in a position to be more attractive to the industry, and give them some specific knowledge," added Hall.
The course is expected to launch later in 2006, according to Price Chopper. Currently HVCC is still fine-tuning the offering.
