Grocers Tentatively Settle With UFCW Local 711 in Las Vegas

PLEASANTON, Calif. -- Safeway said Friday that it has reached a tentative accord
with United Food and Commercial Workers Local 711 for a collective bargaining
agreement covering its Las Vegas workers. Additionally, Albertsons and Kroger
have come to tentative settlements with Local 711, which represents about 7,000
employees in Nevada and Utah, according to published reports.

The union will present the tentative agreement to its members for ratification.
The vote is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, Jan. 25, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
at the union's main hall on North Decatur Blvd. in Las Vegas. Those voting will
be unionized retail clerks and meat department workers at Las Vegas-area
Albertsons, Kroger-owned Food 4 Less, and Smith's, and Safeway-owned Vons. UFCW
Local 711 officials have said that they will recommend ratification to their
members.

"We are pleased we have gotten to this point and are looking forward to the
union members' ratification," Safeway spokeswoman Teena Massingill told the Las
Vegas Sun.

The union members have worked under a contract extension since their three-and-
a-half-year contract ran out Sept. 12. Talks began with the three supermarket
chains in August.

Details of the settlement are being withheld until its ratification, according
to a statement from Safeway. The union has also declined to release details
before Jan. 25.
