HEB Opens 'Greenest' Store
HEB said Friday it opened what it described as its “greenest” store yet, the HEB Bunker Hill Market in Houston, which is the chain’s first certified LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) green building and a showcase for energy-efficient and environmentally friendly operations.
The new 127,900 square foot store includes green building initiatives such as water efficiency systems; energy use-reduction features including high-efficiency HVAC systems; occupancy sensor lighting controls in administrative areas; and LED (Light Emitting Diode) lighting on motion sensors in reach-in frozen food display cases.
The San Antonio, Tex.-based chain said it used recycled content building materials and recycling services in building the Bunker Hill unit, and employed construction practices that ensure healthy indoor air quality for customers and partners.
Several other HEB stores are on the way to being LEED certified, according to a company spokeswoman.
Beyond its green pedigree, the new Houston store will host HEB Showtime Cooking Stations, which will interact with customers daily and feature more than 30 live cooking demos each week.
