IPC Rolls Out 19th Annual Potato Lover’s Month Retail Display Contest

The Idaho Potato Commission (IPC) is inviting retailers to participate in its 19th annual Potato Lover’s Month (PLM) retail display contest. The IPC’s longest-running and most popular promotion will give away over $150,000 in cash and prizes to grocers with the most creative Idaho potato displays during February, which is Potato Lover’s Month. Additionally, all qualified entrants will receive a wireless indoor/outdoor speaker.

As it did last year, the Eagle-based commission is joining forces with Mrs. Dash Seasonings and Molly McButter to help retailers spice up their displays and attract shoppers to the produce section.

“At a time of year when produce sales are slower, the IPC's Potato Lover's Month display contest is a sure-fire and fun way to attract customers to the produce department and encourage them to buy Idaho potatoes along with other fruits and vegetables,” noted IPC VP retail/international Seth Pemsler. “From the thousands of entries we receive every year, many are returning produce managers who know the contest is a win-win opportunity — a chance to win cash plus see an increase in produce sales.”

The winners will receive $1,500 for first place, $1,000 for second place, $750 for third place, $500 for fourth place, $250 for fifth place, and $100 each for 100 honorable mentions, which will be chosen from among the remaining entries. Those stores that win first though fifth place will additionally get a matching prize.

Retailers that wish to take part in the contest can visit www.idahopotato.com/retail to read the rules and order POS materials. The site’s featured POS kit includes two round two-sided PLM logo display signs, two Mylar Spuddy Buddy balloons, one Mylar Mrs. Dash balloon and two two-sided signs (large and small) featuring an appetizing photo to decorate the display. Among the additional tools offered on the site are clip art and photos to help create custom signs.

Qualifying stores must create an eye-catching display prominently featuring the IPC’s PLM POS materials and promoting Idaho potato products (both fresh and dehydrated), Mrs. Dash Seasoning Blends and Molly McButter. Displays must be up, in the produce section of the store, for at least one week during the Jan. 25-to-Feb. 26, 2010, contest period. The contest is open to retail supermarket chains and independents only.

Retailers may use the downloadable POS materials and/or create their own display support materials. Entries are limited to one per store. To enter online (or to get an entry form), retailers must go to www.idahopotato.com/retail and click on “Potato Lover's Month Display Contest.”

The PLM Retail Display Contest Review Committee will judge submissions and award the prizes. Entries will be judged on the following criteria: use of PLM signage, display creativity, how the display incorporates the complementary products, and the display’s perceived salability.

All entries must be received no later than March 31, 2010. The winners will be informed by May 1, 2010, and their displays will be posted on www.idahopotato.com/retail.
