It's Academic: Giant Launching A+ BonusBucks Program for New School Year
LANDOVER, Md. -- Giant Food, based here, is preparing to launch its 16th annual A+ BonusBucks program, which encourages the retailer's shoppers to help provide cash grants to local public or private schools. Since the inception of the program, Giant has given cash grants and educational equipment worth more than $71 million to local schools in Maryland, Virginia, New Jersey, Delaware, and the District of Columbia.
A+ BonusBucks begins Oct. 2 and runs through April 1, 2006. Consumers may designate schools by enrolling at their local Giant Food store or by visiting www.giantfood.com. Whenever they use their BonusCards, shoppers automatically earn points, which are converted into cash grants, for their chosen schools.
Customer participants who designated schools last year need to redesignate them for the new academic year, however. "Students transfer or graduate from schools every year, and new residents move into our market area," explained Barry Scher, Giant's v.p. of public affairs, in a statement. "We void all of the previous year's designations from our database systems so we can ensure that the correct school receives their designated points each year. It's fast and easy for consumers to redesignate schools."
Scher added, "Giant anticipates this year's A+ BonusBucks program will be even more successful than last year's program." Giant raised $2 million for local schools last year.
Giant Food operates 191 supermarkets, 162 of which include full-service pharmacies, in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia, employing over 25,000 associates. Giant stores in Delaware operate under the Super G banner.
