King Kullen Makes Executive Promotions
BETHPAGE, N.Y. - Seven longtime officers and employees have been promoted at King Kullen Grocery Co., Inc., including:
-Thomas Massaro, who has become s.v.p. of operations, a position formerly held by Thomas Reilly, who retired from the chain this past spring. In his new post Massaro will oversee the day-to-day operations of the stores, as well as the perishable and merchandising departments. Massaro, who for the past 12 years was v.p. of perishables, has been with King Kullen since 1974.
-James Flynn, previously v.p./controller, was elevated to s.v.p./finance and administration. Flynn, who has been with King Kullen for 11 years, is a certified public accountant.
-Chad Conklin, a fourth-generation member of the Cullen family, whose great-grandfather, Michael J. Cullen, founded King Kullen 74 years ago, has been elected to the company's board of directors. Conklin, v.p. at the retailer's Shelf Life affiliate, is the first of his generation to be represented on the board. He started his career with King Kullen in 1986.
-Joseph Forte, King Kullen's new v.p./perishables, takes over the position previously held by Tom Massaro. Forte, who has been with King Kullen since 1997, was most recently the chain's director of produce/floral.
-Richard Conger has stepped into Forte's former position as director of produce and floral. Previously the produce coordinator, Conger joined King Kullen in March 1999.
-Guy Savio, the new produce coordinator, began his King Kullen career in 1979, when he was hired as the produce manager for King Kullen's store in Riverhead, N.Y. Prior to joining King Kullen, Savio worked for Hills Supermarkets.
-John Porco, King Kullen's new produce specialist, began his career in the supermarket business as a 15-year-old working for Food Emporium in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. In 1999 he became produce manager at King Kullen's Port Washington Store -- a job he held for the next four years.
Founded in 1930 by Michael J. Cullen and recognized by the Smithsonian Institution as America's first supermarket, King Kullen today employs more than 4,800 people at its 49 store locations.
