Kings Names New President

PARSIPPANY, N.J. -- Kings Super Markets here yesterday named Jim Meister as president of the 27-unit chain. Meister, who begins work on Monday, had been president and c.e.o. of the chain, but left the company five years ago.

Kings said it continues to look for a chief executive to replace Alan Levitan, who left last month. Meister, who began at Kings in 1974, was named president and c.e.o. in 1989 after Kings was bought by Marks & Spencer. According to a published report, Meister will act more in an advisory role, and his job will become part-time once the new c.e.o. is named.

Marks & Spencer had been trying to sell Kings for three years, but last month pulled the chain off the market. It is now working to rebuild consumer confidence in the upscale chain, and recently ran newspaper ads stating its plans to add 150 new products, including a line of ready-to-cook handmade chicken entrees that debuted last week.
