King's Supermarket Removes Tampered Food

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- A King's Supermarket at the Westgate Mall here reported to police this week several incidents of food with pins inserted in it, according to published reports. King's is owned by Weis Supermarkets, based in Sunbury, Pa.

The tampered food consisted of an onion, a half-ham, and two packages of ground beef, noted Weis spokesman Dennis Curtin, who added that the store disposed of most of its fresh meat as a precaution. Curtin said that the company asked all Weis and King's locations in the region to check their products, but discovered no other tampered items, but declined to contact shoppers or issue a public health alert.

"We don't believe that issuing a warning at this point is warranted after inspecting all our stores in the region," Curtin told the Easton, Pa. Express-Times.

The store where the tampered products were bought has added extra security to prevent any further incidents, according to the retailer.
