Kroger May Buy Some Thriftway Stores
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati-based Kroger Co. said last week that it had reached a tentative deal to buy some of the Thriftway stores here that are slated to close within the next year, The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Kroger spokesman Gary Rhodes said the purchase "is not a done deal" and would not confirm locations.
"We've said in the past that as some stores become available, we'll look at them," he said.
Thriftway's owner, Winn-Dixie Stores Inc., announced April 30 that it would close its stores in the Cincinnati area and cut about 2,000 jobs.
Thursday was the first time that Kroger, which has 44.6 percent of the local food market, publicly said it would buy some Thriftway sites.
Winn-Dixie plans to sell or close 111 stores in 16 markets where it's not among the prime competitors.
Winn-Dixie and Bigg's officials would not give details on any talks.
