Kroger, Teamsters in Deal to Delay Possible Strike at Louisville DC
CINCINNATI -- Parties in a dispute involving the Kroger Co. based here and roughly 800 workers at its distribution center in Louisville have delayed a potential strike that had been threatened for Sunday.
Late last week, Kroger said it was prepared to turn over the depot to two private companies, but the sides agreed Friday to push the transfer date back two weeks to allow more time for talks, according to local reports.
Teamsters' leaders want Kroger to make certain job guarantees before the new owners take over.
"Progress is being made and Kroger officials are optimistic an agreement can be reached before the new transfer date of December 3," Tim McGurk, a spokesman in Kroger's Louisville offices, was quoted as saying in local reports.
At the end of the second quarter, Kroger operated 2,477 supermarkets and multi-department stores in 31 states under two dozen local banners, as well as 773 convenience stores, 418 fine jewelry stores, 608 supermarket fuel centers and 42 food processing plants.
