Loblaw’s Phillips Moving to Morrisons in U.K.

Loblaw Cos., Ltd. COO Dalton Phillips will leave the Canadian grocer at the end of March to take the helm at Wm Morrison Supermarkets, Plc, the United Kingdom’s fourth-largest supermarket chain.

Saying he was “both pleased and sad” at the news, Loblaw president and deputy chairman Allan Leighton noted: “Food retail today is a very global business, and the work that we are doing at Loblaw is highly visible around the retail world. Dalton’s appointment is a reflection of this and the progress that we are seen to have made.

Phillips joined Loblaw in January 2007 from upscale Irish department store Brown Thomas, where he had been CEO since 2005. His retail experience also includes positions in New Zealand and Australia at Jardine Matheson.

A subsidiary of George Weston, Ltd., Brampton, Ontario-based Loblaw is Canada's largest food distributor and a top provider of drugstore, general merchandise and financial products and services. The grocer has more than 1,000 corporate and franchised stores across Canada, and employs over 139,000 full-time and part-time associates.
