Low Wholesale American Lamb Prices = High Meat Case Sales Opps

With historically low wholesale prices for American lamb loin and rack cuts, the Denver, Colo.-based American Lamb Board (ALB) is encouraging supermarket retailers to take advantage of the favorable opportunity to aggressively feature American lamb cuts during summer grilling season.

As the foodservice industry has been hit by the economic downturn, an increase in supply has driven lamb wholesale prices to low levels. Recent USDA wholesale pricing for lamb loin cuts and lamb rack cuts were $3.59 and $4.74 per pound respectively for the week ended May 22, figures that are significantly below historically average levels.

“This is a great time for retailers to feature American Lamb loin cuts and take advantage of this wholesale pricing trend,” said Megan Wortman, ALB executive director. “Lamb is not just for fine dining anymore; it is growing in popularity among people who want a great tasting, nutritious, center-of-the-plate protein. More than ever, consumers are looking for great meal options and value while grocery shopping. The current market has created an opportunity for retailers to offer their customers options and value while building their bottom line.”

The scenario bodes favorably for retailers, which will not only be able to offer customers savings at the meat case while boosting profits and building customer loyalty, but which will also be more readily able to capture existing lamb-loving customers while simultaneously introducing new fresh meat options to others that might not be familiar with preparing lamb at home.
