Management Changes at Dominick's

PLEASANTON, Calif - R. Randall Onstead, Jr., president of Safeway's Chicago-area subsidiary, Dominick's Finer Foods, LLC, has resigned for personal reasons. His successor will be Bruce Everette, who will assume leadership of Dominick's as one of his major responsibilities as a Safeway e.v.p.

With the recent death of Onstead's father, Robert R. Onstead, co-founder of the Randall's Food Markets chain in Texas that Safeway acquired in 1999, Randall Onstead will assume a more active role in administering the family's portfolio of investments.

"It's a difficult decision to leave this great city, our new friends, and the fine group of Dominick's employees who have been nothing but supportive this past year," said Onstead. "I am grateful to Safeway for giving me the opportunity to run Dominick's. I wholeheartedly support the decision to bring Bruce Everette in as my successor."

"While we're sorry to lose such a fine leader and able merchant, we respect Randall's decision to do what's best for his family," said Steven A. Burd, chairman, president, and c.e.o. of Safeway. "We gratefully acknowledge his contributions at Dominick's and previously at Randall's, and we wish him continued success and satisfaction in his future endeavors."

In his most recent assignment, Everette had been responsible for executing a range of business strategies and initiatives across Safeway's 10 retail divisions. While assuming the responsibility of managing Dominick's, he will remain one of Safeway's top five executive officers and continue as a member of the corporate real estate committee, which oversees the company's capital spending program. "Bruce is one of our most experienced, talented retail executives," said Burd. "He has managed two other divisions, including our largest one, and has consistently achieved outstanding results. We're confident he will do an excellent job at Dominick's."
