Marsh Supermarkets to Launch Hispanic Format in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS - Indianapolis-based Marsh Supermarkets is launching a Hispanic grocery store called Savin*$ Mercado, modeled after the chain's low-cost store, Savin*$, The Indianapolis Star reports. The store is expected to open in Indianapolis by Monday.

Marsh officials have spent more than a year planning and researching to develop what they think is the perfect recipe for the Hispanic grocery store, according to the story.

The 15,000-square-foot store features bright tones of pink, orange and green; signs printed in Spanish and English; and Latino music. It will carry mostly authentic Mexican products, with just a few U.S. brand- name products. Mercado is the Spanish word for market.

In the census tract surrounding Savin*$ Mercado, Hispanics comprise 8.2 percent of the population, according to the newspaper.

The store's staff will include primarily bilingual workers, and its on-site leaders are co-managers Santiago Caicedo from Colombia and Adam Rawlins, a bilingual American who has worked at other Marsh stores near Hispanic neighborhoods.

"Time after time I was hearing from Hispanics, 'We're dying for a Marsh store with our tradition, our culture,' " said Rawlins.

Marsh is using the East Washington Savin*$ Mercado as a pilot, spokeswoman Jodi Marsh told the newspaper.
