Million-Plus-Square-Foot DC Under Construction for Wakefern Food Corp.

ELIZABETH, N.J. -- A 1,029,600-square-foot distribution center is being built for Wakefern Food Corp., the marketing and distribution arm of ShopRite supermarkets, in Boulder Business Center in Upper Macungie Township, Pa., according to Liberty Property Trust, the Lehigh Valley's largest commercial landlord, which has undertaken the construction project. The DC is scheduled to open in late summer 2005.

"The Lehigh Valley affords us access to our stores in southern New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware," said Wakefern president and c.e.o. Dean Janeway in a statement. "This new facility provides us with additional space to better service our membership and prepares us for future growth."

ShopRite serves four million customers each week through its approximately 200 locations throughout five northeastern states. The facility is expected to employ between 300 and 400 people during the coming six to twelve months.

Liberty bought 83 acres of land at Boulder Business Center on Industrial Boulevard earlier this year and has started construction on the facility.

"Wakefern Food Corp.'s decision to expand its operations into our region once again illustrates that companies are selecting the Lehigh Valley due to its ideal work environment and central location for business," noted Ray Suhocki, president and c.e.o. of Lehigh Valley Economic Development Corp (LVEDC). "We are very pleased about the more than 300 new jobs that Wakefern has committed to our region, knowing that every new job has a strong and direct impact on our communities. LVEDC welcomes them to the Lehigh Valley and looks forward to a long and prosperous relationship with them."

Wakefern and the approximately 200 ShopRite stores located throughout New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and Delaware employ more than 40,000 people.
