Minyards' Carnival Prototype Wins International Design Competition

COPPELL, Texas -- Minyard Food Stores, Inc. and Tampa, Fla.-based API (Architects Plus International) have been recognized for the chain's beautifully designed, Latino-themed Carnival flagship supermarket in Dallas, as the store won first place in the 2007 ISP (Institute of Store Planners)/VM+SD Magazine International Design Competition.

The Institute of Store Planners is an international professional society dedicated to retail store planning and design, while VM+SD, or Visual Merchandising and Store Design, is a magazine for retail designers and store display professionals. Every year, VM+SD and ISP join to award retail store designs over the world.

In 2005, Minyard Food Stores called on API's multicultural experience to create a new 56,000-square-foot concept, repositioning Carnival as the premier Hispanic food retailer in the Dallas/Ft. Worth marketplace by more closely aligning the store's environment and merchandising with the target customer's preferences and desires. The store's core appeal has been expanded across wider demographic channels, taking advantage of the target market's rich and colorful culture.

"This could be one of the best food retail experiences we have ever designed," said
Juan Romero, president and c.e.o. of API, in a statement.

API has developed other well-known concepts for retailers including Sweetbay Supermarket, Bloom, Whole Foods Market, and Wal-Mart.

The award-winning Carnival Super Market will be profiled as Progressive Grocer's Store of the Month in the March 1, 2007 issue.
