Nash Finch to Help Distribute Kids' Books

MINNEAPOLIS - The Nash Finch Co. based here has joined First Book, an international nonprofit organization providing new books to children from low-income families, in an event at the Minnesota Children's Museum to celebrate the launch of a new partnership benefiting needy children.

As part of Nash Finch's new educational program, Feeding Imagination, the First Book Marketplace will distribute 10,000 new books, valued at more than $70,000, to children in need throughout the Twin Cities area.

St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman joined Nash Finch executives to celebrate the launch of the partnership at the event, which also featured children from the New Visions School in Minneapolis and Excel Academy in Brooklyn Park. The children were treated to a story time and book party, with award-winning children's author John Coy, WCCO radio food editor Sue Zelickson, and local basketball star Shona Thorburn of the WNBA's Minnesota Lynx.

Nash Finch's c.e.o. Alec Covington and his wife, Gail, each led small group readings of the Coy's latest book, "Around the World."

Nash Finch serves independent retailers and military commissaries in 31 states, the District of Columbia, Europe, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Iceland, the Azores, and Honduras. The company also owns and operates a base of retail stores, primarily supermarkets under the Econofoods, Family Thrift Center, and Sun Mart trade names.
