NGA to Honor IGA's Haggai as "Great American"
LAS VEGAS -- The National Grocers Association and President and CEO Thomas Zaucha will present Dr. Thomas Haggai, Chairman and CEO of IGA, Inc., the Clarence G. Adamy "Great American Award" later this week during the 2006 N.G.A. Annual Convention and Supermarket Synergy Showcase here.
Dr. Haggai has served as chairman and c.e.o. of IGA for the past 16 years. He was the first non-wholesale food company executive elected to the IGA board, and has been instrumental in expanding the international scope of the IGA system. IGA is the only global supermarketer based in the United States and is the world's largest licensed supermarket network.
Throughout Dr. Haggai's distinguished career, he has served on numerous corporate boards and volunteer associations, said NGA. From 1975 to 1977, he was the director of personnel for the Boy Scouts of America, the largest youth agency in the free world. He also served as an advisor to Colonel Frank Borman at Eastern Air Lines. In addition, Dr. Haggai has served on numerous corporate boards; is a lifetime trustee at High Point University; and is a former member of the advisory board at Furman University.
For more than 50 years, Dr. Haggai has hosted a daily national radio program called "One Minute, Please." He has authored several books and is a regular contributor to various magazines, including a monthly column for the IGA GROCERGRAM.
In 1963, Haggai founded the THA (Thomas Haggai and Associates) Foundation with 250 national business and professional leaders. The foundation awards college scholarships to non-traditional students returning to school to obtain certification as elementary school teachers. It has awarded more than 800 scholarships amounting in over 2 million dollars.
