PBH Urges Parents to Shop with the Kids

In tandem with September is National Fruits & Veggies-More Matters Month, the Produce for Better Health Foundation is pushing activities to help parents introduce the bountiful variety of fruits and vegetables to their children.

PBH's new "Take Your Child to the Supermarket" program features as a series of fun, educational activities that encourages parents to teach their children about fruits and vegetables via a trip to a grocery store. The activities are age-appropriate for kids four through ten years old, but may be appropriate for kids a little younger or a little older depending on the individual child, said PBH.

The supermarket-centered activities give parents new tools to help them engage the whole family in the shopping experience, and teach children that fruits and veggies can be fun.

The activity pages can also be printed out by teachers to provide a way to reinforce nutrition lessons while the kids enjoy a fun game.

"Parents have a tremendous influence on their children," said Elizabeth Pivonka, president/c.e.o. of the Wilmington, Del.-based PBH. "Taking a little extra time at the grocery store to interact with kids and single out fruits and vegetables as important could make those kids more willing to give healthy fruits and veggies another try."
