Peapod by Stop & Shop Expands Service in New York

CHICAGO and Quincy, Mass. - Leading Internet grocer Peapod Inc., and Stop & Shop, New England's largest supermarket chain, today announced the expansion of the Norwalk, Conn.-based Peapod by Stop & Shop online shopping and delivery service into Westchester County, N.Y.

The expansion represents a 20 percent increase in the number of households with access to the service's Norwalk distribution center, located adjacent to a Super Stop & Shop.

"Our business in the southern Connecticut market has grown rapidly since we opened Peapod by Stop & Shop last June," said Marc van Gelder, Peapod's president and CEO. "This strong demand played a key role in our decision to expand the service area. We are pleased to offer our convenient service to more busy families in this region, and we look forward to serving them."

Residents of Rye, Port Chester, Mamaroneck, Larchmont and Harrison, N.Y., can log on to www.stopandshop.com to place orders. Deliveries begin November 13. Thereafter, customers will be able to receive deliveries as soon as the next day after placing their orders online.

Peapod by Stop & Shop began serving most of Fairfield County, Conn., in June 2000.

Peapod currently serves customers in five metropolitan markets: Chicago, Boston, southern Connecticut/Westchester County, N.Y., Washington, D.C. and Long Island, N.Y. The company also recently expanded its service to three new Boston suburbs: Northborough, Shrewsbury and Raynham.

Both Stop & Shop and Peapod are wholly owned subsidiaries of Ahold, a leading international food retail and foodservice company based in the Netherlands
