Penn Traffic Closes One Store Each in Pennsylvania, Vermont
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Penn Traffic Co. here, which has been struggling to reverse its financial losses in recent years, closed a P&C Food Market in Waterbury, Vt. and a BiLo Foods in DuBois, Pa. over the weekend, a company spokesman told Progressive Grocer.
About 50 employees worked at each location, the spokesman said.
The spokesman, Marc Jampole, noted that the company has closed a number of stores lately, including two Syracuse P&C stores at the end of last year. In most cases Penn Traffic has been transferring employees to other company banners in the area -- such as a new Fresh Market format store in DuBois -- although not in the case of the Waterbury location, since there are no nearby Penn Traffic-owned stores, he said.
Jampole said that the company would provide severance packages for employees leaving the company. He added that the retailer has announced no further store closures.
The grocer is in the midst of reorganizing its business in the wake of emerging from bankruptcy protection in 2005.
The Waterbury closure leaves three P&C stores in Vermont, in the towns of Colchester, Bradford, and White River Junction. Last year, a 55,000-square-foot Shaw's supermarket opened less than a mile away from the Waterbury store, according to a local press report.
Penn Traffic currently operates 106 supermarkets under the P&C, Quality Markets, and BiLo Foods banners in New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont.
