Penn Traffic to Install Pharmacy Management System in 42 Stores.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Northeast regional grocer Penn Traffic Co., based here, will install NDC PharmacyRx, a network-based pharmacy practice management system tailored to community pharmacy, in its 42 stores that feature pharmacies. The system is provided by Atlanta-based NDCHealth.

Three stores are scheduled to go live on NDC PharmacyRx this month. NDCHealth anticipates that all system installations will be completed by September 2005.

Penn Traffic said it selected the new system to help boost daily operating efficiencies, reach e-prescribing marketing goals, and enhance continuing patient safety initiatives.

"We opted to convert to NDCHealth's new network-based system because its functionality addresses several market needs we have identified as key to improving our day-to-day operations, as well as achieving our corporate initiatives on e-prescribing and patient safety," noted Mario A. Pisano, Penn Traffic's corporate director of pharmacy, in a statement. "The enterprise-level capabilities will enable us to manage and update pricing real-time in all of our stores from a central location. This capability should support us in improving revenue directly, but also enable us to devote more time to proactive pricing activities and direct patient care initiatives. Further, we expect the integrated e-prescribing feature, in combination with electronic signature capture and prescription scanning functionality, to support our in-store pharmacists in filling prescriptions more efficiently, with improved accuracy."

NDCHealth chairman and c.e.o. Walter Hoff added, "Our company brings in-depth business process knowledge to our automation solutions, to help our customers increase quality of care and better compete in the market."

Penn Traffic operates 109 supermarkets in Pennsylvania, upstate New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire under the Bi-Lo Foods, Quality Markets, Riverside Markets, and P&C Foods banners. The company additionally runs wholesale food distribution businesses serving about 119 licensed franchise and independent operators.
