Penn Traffic's Quality Markets DC to Close

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Quality Markets office and distribution center in Celoron, N.Y., owned by the financially troubled Penn Traffic Co. here, will cease operations within 60 days.

The company currently employs about 50 people at the DC. On the subject of severance packages, Penn Traffic spokesman Marc Jampole told Progressive Grocer, "We will treat our employees fairly and with respect," adding that further details were as yet unavailable because they needed to be "bargained according to contract" with the employees' union, the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1.

Penn Traffic operates 109 supermarkets in upstate New York, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, and Vermont under the BiLo, P&C, and Quality banners.
