Pennsylvania Plea: No Booze in Supermarkets
HARRISBURG, Pa -- Gubernatorial candidate and former Philadelphia mayor Ed Rendell has received strong opposition to his proposal to move state-controlled liquor retail operations into supermarkets.
Ed Cloonan, president of the Independent State Store Union that represents state store managers, has sent Rendell a strongly worded letter protesting that blending the operations with private retailing operations undermines the basic idea behind state-controlled stores.
"Alcohol is not cut flowers; alcohol is not cashed checks; alcohol is not a prescription issued by a medical doctor; alcohol is not any fast food; alcohol is the No. 1 drug of use and abuse in PA and the USA," read Cloonan's letter. "The Pennsylvania state store system does not sell as much as we can, whenever we can, to whomever we can, as cheap as we can."
Rendell was recently chairman of the Democratic National Committee.
