Philadelphia Shopping Plaza Receives Fresh Funding

PHILADELPHIA -- The New Progress Plaza redevelopment project at Broad and Oxford streets here received $5 million in grant funding. The estimated $11 million project will bring a 46,000 square-foot Fresh Grocer supermarket to the site, and allow room for existing retailers to expand and several new retailers to move in.

The supermarket is part of the state's Fresh Food Financing Initiative, which helps subsidize the construction of supermarkets in underserved communities. Evans presented a $250,000 grant to the project last spring.

Local officials said it took eight years to find a replacement for the now-defunct Super Fresh that previously anchored the shopping center. Local officials are hailing the return of a supermarket to the North Philadelphia neighborhood as a sign of things to come for the urban district surrounding Temple University.

Fresh Grocer presently operates two stores in Philadelphia -- one of which is in close proximity to the University of Pennsylvania -- and is planning other new locations near La Salle and Villanova universities.
