Price Chopper/Golub Corp. Dedicates New HQ

Price Chopper Supermarkets/the Golub Corp. last week officially dedicated its new headquarters building in downtown Schenectady, N.Y. The ceremony included a flag-raising by marines from the local recruiting office, the singing of the national anthem by 12-year-old Arielle King, and speeches from Price Chopper officials, project developers, and city, county and state government representatives.

The six-story, 240,000-square-foot building houses over 725 associates who support the grocery chain’s supermarket operations, representing all departments but distribution, which is set to expand at the company’s Rotterdam, N.Y., campus.

The new building, which was constructed on a dilapidated brownfield, exemplifies the pledge Price Chopper and its chairman and CEO, Neil Golub, made to play a major role in the revitalization of downtown Schenectady, a goal he took up from his father, company co-founder “Mr. Bill” Golub.

According to Neil Golub: “Schenectady is and always has been our hometown. When it became apparent that we were outgrowing our old main-office facility, relocating to downtown Schenectady and becoming a part of the city’s renaissance was a natural move for us. The dedication of this building, with all of its sustainable accoutrements, marks more than just a milestone in the illustrious history of our company and our city. It symbolizes the fulfillment of Mr. Bill’s challenge to bring the downtown back to life. And it also represents the solidity of our company’s future and our core values of caring about our community, our environment and our associates.”

“Thanks to the Golub family and Price Chopper, Schenectady’s economic renaissance and environmental leadership [are] stronger than ever,” noted Schenectady Mayor Brian Stratton.

The new facility features a variety of state-of-the-art systems to save energy, promote water efficiency and lower emissions. As well as incorporating recycled materials such as carpeting and steel wherever possible, the building contains raised flooring throughout to enable more efficient installation of electrical and HVAC components, and makes use of daylight harvesting, energy management controls, rainwater harvesting for irrigation, and a fuel cell to supplement power from the grid in the form of three 65-kilowatt natural gas-powered high efficiency micro-turbines and photovoltaics. Golub Corp. has applied to the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) to obtain gold-level LEED certification status for the site.

“The energy-efficiency measures Price Chopper incorporated into its new headquarters are emblematic of the company’s strong commitment to reducing its environmental impact in operating its facilities,” said Francis J. Murray, CEO of the New York State Energy Research & Development Agency (NYSERDA), who presented the grocer with a High Performance Building Plaque, indicating that the building operates at an efficiency rating of over 30 percent above building code. “Price Chopper’s smart investments in reducing its energy use provide a model for both the supermarket industry and for New York’s business community.”

Other features of the new headquarters reflect the company’s dedication to the health and wellness of its associates: a fitness center/workout facility and a café offering fresh foods.

The Golub Corp. owns and operates 125 Price Chopper grocery stores in New York, Vermont, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Golub’s approximately 24,000 associates collectively own 52 percent of the company’s privately held stock.
