Publix Plans New Perishable DC in Florida

LAKELAND, Fla. - Building on plans to expand its distribution capacity, Publix Super Markets, Inc. here said it would construct a perishable warehouse and distribution center in Punta Gorda, Fla. The 600,000-square-foot facility will be Publix’s eighth distribution center in Florida, where it operates the majority of its stores and continues to build new ones.

The Punta Gorda site will provide distribution facilities for frozen food, dairy, boxed meat, and produce, Publix said. The company plans for this facility to service its West and Southwest Florida stores, supplementing its perishable warehouses in Lakeland.

In a ceremony on Nov. 30, Florida Governor Jeb Bush joined Publix’s vice chairman Barney Barnett as the company revealed its plans. Bush thanked Publix for its “interest in creating high-value jobs” and “making a substantial capital investment in Charlotte County following damage the community sustained due to recent storms.”

Publix spokeswoman Maria Rodamis said in a statement the new facility represents the continuation of the company’s expansion plans, which began with the opening of its Atlanta low-velocity distribution center earlier this year.

Having signed a letter of intent for the Punta Gorda site, Publix will begin the process of finalizing a contract for the purchase of the land and working with county leaders to outline and implement the infrastructure improvements needed to complete the project.

Currently Publix operates 842 stores in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee.
