Publix Set to Expand Into Chattanooga

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Publix Super Markets here got the green light it was looking for earlier this week, as the Chattanooga City Council approved rezoning for a new $10 million Publix grocery store in Hixson, Tenn.

The store will be the first Chattanooga-area location for Publix, which currently operates 13 stores in middle Tennessee and is eyeing more locations throughout that part of the state. Publix entered the Nashville market in mid-2002.

Although some Hixson residents had complained that the new store would add to traffic congestion in the area, city Public Works administrator Steve Leach presented research that showed traffic won't be any worse than it already is, according to an article in the Chattanooga Times.

The Hixson Publix will be approximately 54,340 square feet and create 250 jobs. It is expected to open in the third quarter of 2008.

Publix has said it also hopes to open a second Chattanooga-area store at a former Winn-Dixie in the East Brainerd neighborhood. That location is 45,000 square feet.

Other grocery retailers competing in the Chattanooga area include Bi-Lo, Food Lion, Aldi, and Wal-Mart.
