Publix Shelves Internet Shopping

LAKELAND, Fla. - Publix Super Markets has put on hold plans to expand its PublixDirect Internet shopping service to the Orlando and Atlanta markets, according to a report in The Tampa Tribune.

"We're putting both of those markets on hold pending further results in South Florida," Tom O'Connor, president of PublixDirect, told the newspaper. "I think there's still a commitment by the company. We've pretty much hit projections. I just can't say moving into other markets will make a significant difference to the bottom line of Publix," he said.

Publix currently operates a 140,000 square-foot warehouse in Pompano Beach to service its South Florida online operation. It stocks more than 8,000 SKUs, including dairy, meat, poultry, and produce items, plus a full-service bakery. Publix had hoped to set up similar facilities in Atlanta and Orlando.
