Record Shoppers Lift Christmas Sales at UK's Asda
LONDON - Record numbers of customers helped the UK's Asda, the supermarket group owned by Wal-Mart, report double digit like-for-like sales growth over Christmas, the Financial Times reports.
From Dec. 21 to Dec. 24 customer numbers increased by 15 percent. More than 1 million turkeys and over 1,000 tons of sprouts were sold.
In the 12 days to Dec. 24 the supermarket group's six Asda Wal-Mart Supercentres took more than #30 million ($43.5 million) in sales, while 85 of its stores took over #3 million.
Non-food sales at the group shot up by 52 percent compared with this time last year. Among the more popular items were DVD players and films and televisions.
Richard Baker, trading director, attributed Asda's success to its large product offering and keen pricing, according to the Financial Times.
