Riesbeck's Breaks Ground on New Ohio Site

BRIDGEPORT, Ohio -- Officials of the 80-year-old Riesbeck's Food Markets, Inc., this week broke ground here for a new grocery store that will be situated on property adjacent to a former Giant Eagle store.

The 40,000-sq.-ft. store, which is slated to open next April, will compete with Wal-Mart and Kroger, among others. In published reports, Richard Riesbeck, president and c.e.o. of the family held chain, called the new project "a testimony of faith," noting that the new facility will not only offer quality food but also Bridgeport's first drive-thru pharmacy.

A flash flood had caused the adjacent former Giant Eagle to close down after several feet of water entered the building and destroyed its contents, including cash registers and shelving. The new Riesbeck's unit, which will be constructed as a freestanding building that will look similar to Riesbeck's store in neighboring St. Clairsville, Ohio, will be 10 feet higher than the former Giant Eagle.

Riesbeck's operates both conventional and limited-assortment stores in Ohio and West Virginia.
