Rutter’s Farm Stores Unveils New Foodservice Program

In a move to differentiate from other convenience store chains, Pennsylvania operator Rutter’s Farm Stores has introduced a foodservice lineup with such offerings as custom stir-fry and fresh-baked bread at renovated locations, and the first new store to feature the program set to open late this month.

“We’ve spent months developing a menu that’s not typically associated with a convenience store,” said Jerry Weiner, v.p. of food service. “We’ve positioned ourselves to compete against restaurants as well as convenience stores. And yet we’ve retained the ‘fast’ aspect, as every item on our menu can be prepared in less than four minutes from the time one of our team members starts to work on it.”

For the stir-fry, customers have the choice of creating custom “oriental bowls” and fajitas. The bowls, available in Fried Rice, White Rice, Oriental Noodle, and Veggie varieties, come with a choice of beef, chicken or pork; sautéed toppings (snow peas, broccoli, onions, mushrooms, peppers); and dressings (teriyaki, sweet and sour, General Tso’s). Customers can also combine ingredients to create custom steak, chicken, and veggie fajitas.

The company’s new fresh-baked sub and cibatta rolls are available in seven varieties for either sandwich orders or individual retail purchase. The sub rolls come in white, wheat, Italian, garlic and “everything” (sesame and poppy seeds, garlic and onion) varieties, while the cibatta is available in regular and multi-grain varieties.

The new foodservice program comes with the most ambitious growth plans in Rutter’s 40-year history. The company plans to invest over $55 million this year to build 10 stores and 11 car washes, thus adding 350 jobs to the area economy.

Family-owned and third generation-managed, York, Pa.-based Rutter’s operates 51 convenience stores in York, Adams, Cumberland, Franklin and Lancaster counties.
