Safeway Invites Customers to 'Round Up' Hunger
LANHAM, Md. - To combat the effects of hardship in the Baltimore-Washington market, Safeway is inviting its customers to help "round up" hunger this month.
Throughout April, all local Safeway Food and Drug stores will offer customers an opportunity to round up their grocery order to the nearest dollar with the change automatically donated to the Maryland Food Bank in the Baltimore area or the Capital Area Food Bank in metropolitan Washington, DC.
"The economic downturn has meant that our food banks have been hit hard. There has been an increased need for food and a decrease in donations," says Greg TenEyck, director of public affairs for Safeway's Eastern Division and chairman of the Capital Area Food Bank. "If everyone just donates a few cents every time they shop, together we can impact the lives of people in our community who need our help."
Safeway operates 136 stores in this area, including 75 in Maryland, 44 in Virginia, 16 in the District of Columbia and one in Delaware.
