Safeway.com Projects Additional Growth on West Coast

PLEASANTON, Calif. - After launching its online service nearly two years ago, Safeway.com is on track to open additional stores for order fulfillment in the greater Bay Area as its customer demand continues to grow.

"We expect strong performance in the first and second quarters of this year, driven by continued customer demand for our online grocery shopping service," Safeway.com president Mitch Rhodes told the East Bay Business Times. "Advertising and, more importantly, word-of-mouth testimonials from satisfied customers continue to fuel our growth. To meet this increase in demand, we plan to open new (order fulfillment) stores around the greater Bay Area in the coming months. New markets will include Vallejo, Benicia, Antioch, Fairfield and Vacaville."

Rhodes said the company has been making fresh food increasingly available this quarter through its online shopping service. "Both produce and meat freshness have improved significantly with upgrades implemented at Safeway stores," he noted.

Rhodes claims that Safeway Inc. has the largest online grocery of any brick-and-mortar chain in the nation, serving major West Coast markets from San Diego to Seattle.
