Save Mart to Speed Checkouts With New POS System

MODESTO, Calif. -- Save Mart Supermarkets, the 123-store regional chain based here, plans to begin a chain-wide update of its point-of-sale (POS) software and hardware this summer.

For the revamp, Save Mart will install NCR Advanced Checkout Solution (ACS), a software platform designed for high-volume checkouts at retailers ranging from single-store operations to large chains. Save Mart also selected NCR RealPOS 80 terminals with the DynaKey cashier interface and NCR RealPOS thermal printers. Installation is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2006.

"As we evaluated our POS options, speed of checkout and high availability were at the top of our list," said Save Mart's director of strategic development, Mathew Francis. "NCR demonstrated the ability of ACS with DynaKey to reduce cashier training time and improve productivity at the checkout. We also believe the open systems architecture, rugged design, and 'tool-free' serviceability of NCR's POS terminals will help us meet our long-term investment protection and operating-expense objectives. This implementation will improve our front-end performance and our customers' shopping experience."

Save Mart also plans to implement Consumer Marketing (ACS-CM), an extension of NCR's ACS application that helps food retailers quickly develop customized promotional programs using a series of wizards to guide them through the process.

As part of the installation, NCR's professional services team will integrate the new solution with all of Save Mart' existing systems. In addition, NCR and Save Mart expect to finalize a five-year maintenance agreement that includes the use of NCR's Retail Systems Manager -- a program that monitors POS hardware "vital signs" and allows accurate diagnosis and remote resolution of system issues.
