Schnuck Markets to Open Three New Stores in Memphis Area

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - St. Louis-based Schnuck Markets Inc. plans to open three large new Memphis-area stores with additional neighborhood retail centers in 2004, according to a report in The Commercial Appeal, a Memphis newspaper.

Craig Schnuck, chairman and CEO, said Friday that the company investment in the three new Schnucks-anchored neighborhood centers will exceed $40 million.

Schnucks also is making major renovations to three former Seessel's stores in Memphis it acquired this June from Albertsons Inc. It will start two others in January and eventually renovate all of them. No cost estimate was available for the renovation work.

Each new Schnucks store will have about 63,000 square feet and will be similar in concept and look to 45 of the company's newest stores in Missouri, Illinois and Indiana, Schnuck said.

Schnucks has 102 stores in its chain, including 65 in the St. Louis metro area.
