Schnucks to Debut First Quad Location Store May 24; Lake St. Louis Store Named 'Biz of Year'

ST. LOUIS -- Schuck Markets Inc. next Tuesday will open its first combination grocery store in the Quad Cities, in Bettendorf, Iowa. The store will feature a variation of a new prototype store design.

Company officials from the family-held chain are looking forward to welcoming their newest customers during grand opening festivities for their 103rd store one week from today. Craig Schnuck, chairman and c.e.o., predicts, "The store's customer-friendly layout and product displays [will] make a trip to the grocery store seem more like entertainment! Opening day, like every other day at Schnucks, will focus on the customer. Everything on the site is proceeding according to schedule, thanks to the good work of our local contractors. My brothers and I are looking forward to greeting many of our new customers at the grand opening."

Store manager John Carr is duly anxious to give customers a first tour of the new store. "Our engineers came up with an interesting new floor plan that will make our store easier to shop than most others," he explained, "Eight-foot aisles are family-friendly and allow customers to flow freely from department to department. As an added convenience, we have made room for our grab-and-go items right in the front of the store. I think the potential for this store is incredible. There's nothing like it in the market."

Carr says his store will feature a custom floral department, an in-store bakery, an expansive deli/seafood section and a service meat department. "In addition to Certified Angus Beef, the store will also offer an extensive selection of fresh poultry and seafood on ice."

The 63,000-square-foot store will employ more than 200 full-time and part-time associates. The Schnucks human resources team reports receiving more than 1,000 applicants for grocery jobs, and has hired more than 60 percent of the total needed. Applications are still being accepted.

In other Schnucks' news, the company's Lake St. Louis store was honored recently as the Lake St. Louis Chamber of Commerce's "Business of the Year."

Chamber president Jeff Unterreiner said Schnucks was selected for the award because the store has brought other businesses to the property and helped spur quality developments on the west side of the city. "These developments are bringing services to the residents and needed tax revenues to the city," noted Unterreiner. The food and drug store, located at 101 Civic Center Drive, opened June 15, 2004 and anchors the Shoppes at Lake St. Louis community shopping center while employing 120 associates.

Store manager Bob Pace was proud that his store team was singled out for the honor. "We share this honor with our customers. The people of Lake St. Louis and the surrounding communities have welcomed us with open arms and responded well to our unique combination of quality products, service, variety and value," said Pace. "In the years to come, Schnucks associates will look forward to serving area families and contributing to the growth of Lake St. Louis community."

Founded in St. Louis in 1939, Schnuck Markets, Inc. currently operates 102 stores, including five Logli locations, and 97 pharmacies in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Tennessee, and Mississippi.
