Schnucks Union Ave. Memphis Makeover Debuts to Rave Reviews

ST. LOUIS -- Just in time for the holiday season, Schnucks, based here, unveiled a major remodel at its Union Ave. store in midtown Memphis that's reportedly wowing customers in the aisles.

"As shoppers enter the store, they are responding favorably to the new decor package and changes that we have made," said store manager David Alcorn, noting the 64-year-old store's numerous user-friendly updates.

Along with upgrades to the interior decor and ceiling tiles, the shelving has been reconfigured to enhance space and allow for more product variety. Also, store refrigeration units also have been replaced with equipment that's technologically state-of-the-art, higher-capacity and more energy-efficient.

Alcorn says the lighter decor palette makes the store look and feel larger, while new multideck cases, the latest in refrigerator technology, have significantly increased perishable variety, especially in produce, bakery, deli, seafood, and meat.

"Our marketing and merchandising team estimates we have added 200 items throughout the perishable areas. In grocery and dairy we have added about 500 items, and that should make for a great variety of choices," said Alcorn.

Scott Schnuck, president and c.o.o., says that the company is still looking at options that will allow customers a larger store. At only 26,000 square feet, the Union store is the smallest of Schnucks' 102 stores.

"Our efforts to expand or replace the store will continue," said Schnuck. "We believed the improvements that we have made were necessary so that we may continue to offer the best possible service and variety to our customers."

Schnuck Markets, Inc. currently operates 102 grocery stores, including five Logli stores, and 99 pharmacies in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Mississippi and Iowa.
