Shop-Rite Starts In-store TV Network

ELIZABETH, N.J. – Shop-Rite has contracted with PRN, a San Francisco-based provider of in-store media solutions, to install an in-store television network at checkout lanes in more than 140 ShopRite stores located throughout the New York City and Philadelphia markets.

Programming and advertising on the PRN network in ShopRite stores will include a mix of relevant, valuable tips and information customized for shoppers. "It is a value-added service we are providing for customers waiting in line at our stores," said Karen Meleta, manager of media relations for Wakefern, Shop-Rite's parent company.

Planned broadcast content will include segments from PRN partners such as Food Network, Discovery Health, Oxygen Network, and In Style magazine. In addition, news, sports headlines, and weather by store zip code will be updated automatically throughout the day, using wireless digital network technology. "Plus two minutes out of each segment will be for ShopRite to customize," added Meleta. "During this time we will include some information such as local news –- very local information like high school sports scores, for example -– and we will also run spots about the various programs we support."

Bill Crombie, v.p., corporate merchandising and advertising for Wakefern, noted: "After completing a pilot program in our stores for weeks, we found that PRN offers a great option for us to connect with our shoppers in a meaningful way that builds more loyalty and trust in our brand. Our shoppers have told us that they 'love the screens' because they provide news, weather, and product information while [people are] checking out of the store."
