ShopRite to Bow 4 Connecticut Stores

Four Connecticut stores will open under the ShopRite banner this week. The ShopRites of Canton and Enfield will celebrate their grand openings with ribbon cutting ceremonies on May 26, while the ShopRites of Stratford and Hamden will make their official debuts on May 26 and May 28, respectively.

The four renovated former Shaw’s locations now boast energy-efficient lighting, a storewide recycling and composting program, and shopping baskets made from recycled materials, along with such familiar ShopRite features as a fresh bake shop, a full-service butcher; fresh seafood delivered seven days a week, a full-service floral department, a coffee bar, a wide variety of gourmet cheeses; and a prepared foods department featuring salads, sandwiches, soups, pizza, and other specialties for dining in or taking out, as well as a fresh-made sushi bar, according to Wakefern Food Corp., the cooperative whose members run stores under the ShopRite banner. Each supermarket measures over 65,000 square feet and will employ upwards of 200 associates.

Additionally, the Stratford store will offer a full-service catering department and the exclusive ShopRite From Home delivery service. Extra services at the Hamden store will include catering, a full-service pharmacy and an on-site registered dietitian, who will be available to discuss health and dietary issues with customers at no charge, as well as creating customized meal plans.

Joseph Family Markets, headed by Chuck Joseph and his wife, Debbie, owns the Canton store, and Miller Farms Family Markets, run by the Miller family, owns the Enfield store. Both families have recently moved to their respective communities to better serve their new customers and neighbors. Milford Markets, which is owned and operated by Harry Garafalo and his wife, Ann, owns Stratford and Hamden stores. The lifelong Milford residents also own the ShopRites of Milford and West Haven.

Wakefern bought a total of 11 former Shaw’s locations in Connecticut earlier this year, all of which will be converted to ShopRite stores. In addition to the four opening this week, four will roll out next month, with the remaining three scheduled to bow over the course of the summer and fall.

Keasbey, N.J.-based Wakefern, the largest supermarket cooperative in the United States, consists of 46 members operating over 200 ShopRite Supermarkets throughout New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Delaware and Maryland.
