ShopRite Tops Philly-area Kosher Poll
ELIZABETH, N.J. -- ShopRite of Garden State Pavilion in Cherry Hill, N.J. and ShopRite of Roosevelt Boulevard in Philadelphia made a strong showing in all four categories as the "Best of Kosher Philadelphia" in the stores/butchers section of the recently released 2006 Philadelphia Area Kosher Community Survey. The survey was the first of its kind in the area.
The Cherry Hill store earned winner status for its service quality, selection, quality of fresh and prepared foods, and price, and was a runner-up for its store environment (decor/appearance/cleanliness), while the Philadelphia store was a runner-up for its selection, quality of fresh and prepared foods, and price.
More than 150 consumers participated in the poll, which was conducted by Silver Spring, Md.-based Kosher Community Surveys, LLC (KCS).
Other local supermarket retailers singled out in the survey were Norristown, Pa.-based Safeway division Genuardi's, which won for store environment; and recent Supervalu acquisition Acme Markets, based in Malvern, Pa., which won for quality of fresh and prepared foods. Both Genuardi's and Acme were runners-up for service quality.
Steve Ravitz, Supermarkets of Cherry Hill, Inc. president, said the store earned the recognition via its 3,300-square-foot "Kosher Experience" store-within-a-store, adherence to the highest kosher standards, and hard-working associates.
"We have spent an enormous amount of time and effort in developing the 'Kosher Experience' over the past seven years," noted Ravitz in a statement. Of the Kosher Experience staff, he said, "The difference is customer service, and all the credit belongs to them. They're very dedicated, very knowledgeable in all aspects of Kashruth [Jewish dietary laws]."
Said Richard McMenamin, owner of the ShopRite of Roosevelt Boulevard: "We've done a lot in recent years to enhance our kosher offerings, and it's rewarding to know it's appreciated. This kind of feedback always helps us better understand our customers," he added. "And, from a competitive standpoint, the results are encouraging us to look at ways we can take our kosher program to the next level."
KCS will conduct the Philadelphia-area survey on a yearly basis, said president Neil Rosenbaum. As well as serving as a consumer resource, the survey, Rosenbaum explained, "can provide restaurants, bakeries, and stores with guidance on how to better serve their customers." The company also fields similar surveys in the Boston, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C. areas.
ShopRite supermarkets are members of Wakefern Food Corp., a retailer-owned cooperative with stores in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Delaware.
