Spartan Stores to Buy Pharmacies In 12 D&W Stores

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Spartan Stores, Inc. here will acquire the inventory and prescription files of the pharmacies inside 12 D&W Fresh Markets that the wholesaler-retailer recently acquired.

Spartan will buy the pharmacy assets from a subsidiary of PrairieStone Pharmacy, LLC. It said it expects to rebrand the in-store pharmacies under the D&W Fresh Market and Family Fare Pharmacies names.

The acquisition will increase the Spartan's pharmacy operations to 59 locations.

The transaction, expected to come through next month, should also boost Spartan's retail segment sales to approximately $20 million to $25 million annually.

With warehouse facilities in Grand Rapids and Plymouth, Mich., Spartan Stores distributes more than 40,000 private-label and national brand products to over 350 independent grocery stores in Michigan. Spartan also owns and operates 68 retail supermarkets and 19 deep-discount food and drug stores in Michigan and Ohio, including Family Fare Supermarkets, Glen's Markets, D&W Fresh Markets and The Pharm.
