COLTON, Calif. - Phil Smith, the c.f.o. at California supermarket chain Stater Bros. Markets here, has been promoted to the newly created position of e.v.p. finance, c.f.o., and chief accounting officer.

Smith is a 19-year member of the Stater Bros. "family" of employees, and has more than 30 years of financial experience in the supermarket industry. He joined the company in 1987 as controller, and was promoted to v.p.-controller in 1998, adding the title of chief accounting officer two years later. In November of 2000, Smith was promoted to his most recent position of s.v.p., c.f.o., and chief accounting officer. Smith reports to Jack H. Brown, chairman of the board and c.e.o.

Prior to joining Stater Bros., Smith served as v.p. and c.f.o. at Market Basket Food Stores in east Texas from 1984 to 1987. From 1975 to 1984, he served as v.p. and controller for various divisions of Cullum Companies, Inc. in Dallas (which is now owned by Safeway).

"Phil's promotion is well deserved and due to his integrity, reliability, professionalism, and loyalty," Brown said in a statement. "His contributions and leadership have been and will remain very valuable to the continued growth of Stater Bros."

Stater Bros., the largest privately owned supermarket chain in California, operates 163 supermarkets.
